Default Laptop hard drive question

My recent dell laptop basically blew up. it's old and instead of trying to figure out what went wrong and spending more money on it, i decided to buy a new computer. now the question is how can I get the data from my internal laptop HD to either my external or my new computer. is there some sort of casing i can buy to make my laptop drive external? I need these files. thanks in advance.

you can use a 2.5" external caddy or you can get an adapter to plug it in to your pc like you would a normal hdd

^ why USB, Firewire is faster..

both will work Im just wondering why you chose that one.
(or were you compairing it to the internal connector version?)

because firewire isn't widely used and has more compatability issues compared to USB. i haven't really compared a firewire hdd to a USB one but i think in this case the speed increase is mostly theoretical rather than actual
