Default Laptop DVD burner upgrade on Dell

I have a Dell Inspiron 9100 and want to upgrade the DVD+/-RW drive. I don't want to order the part from Dell. Does anyone know the likelihood of compatibility issues if I bought a standar laptop DVD burner? I know that on Dell desktops, some components are proprietary, but they usually stick to standard IDE devices. Is it the same way in the Dell Laptop world?

Thanks for any help that can be offered.

if its a new laptop, i wouldnt mess with it.

Take it to a Dell authorized dealer, and get them to look at it or install the drive.
