If you have a big branded (eg HP, Dell etc) laptop and you want to wipe and start over. Can you just go and buy a Windows XP pro cd from a shop and install it. Or do you need to run the stupid recovery cd that came with it?

i've reloaded my hp pavilion ze4145 with xp pro many times. before i formatted the first time i dl the drivers and burnt them to a disk

You can do either, the restore cd is not required. It's nice to keep around, though, as you're not provided with an actual xp disc.
