Default Just imagine what this could mean.

I know it's old news, but Seagate unveils highest-density hard drive. 500GB on a single platter?!? Here comes the 3/4TB drive...

TG Daily - Seagate unveils highest-density hard drive

Hmmm, solid state. What exactly is a solid state drive ? In guitar amps (among other things) that means all transistor, and no tubes. So does this mean it is a non-tube HDD ?

It's not about SSD. It just says something in the 1st paragraph... read the whole thing.

that's not to big of a jump is it? i mean...don't the WD 640gb only have 2 platters? if so that's 320gb per platter..so 320-500 is a lot..but not a huge jump.

^^^ to the game above..solid state drives use magnets or something....no physical moving parts. Faster read speeds but slower write speeds, limited number of writes, expensive, not much space, and if your data is lost...it's truly lost...no getting it back like you can with hard drives

solid state drives are just a gigantic flash drive basically.

I did read the whole thing - time constraint of having to go to work after reading the article led to the short comment on the solid state feature. Anyway, that is an interesting article. Something like 329 GB per square inch ?? WTF !
