Default Installing Windows on partition

If my friend were to install Windows XP on his harddrive, because his first partition of Windows XP wasn't working, would he be able to install a 2nd partition of Windows XP onto the harddrive, and then transfer the files he needs onto the other partition?

yes, but you'll need a boot program that will allow you to make a new partition without being in windows, i think Partition MAgic can do it, not sure though.

Once he gets XP installed just transfer the files over and reformat the other partition within the new installation of XP.
