Installing new HSF. Do I need to clean off thermal compound? How?

Hey guys.

I want to replace my Volcano 9 HSF on my 1.4ghz Athlon T-bird because its a freaking hair dryer x2. I have never had to replace a HSF or even remove it on any of my rigs before. When I take it off and install a new HSF should I remove any compound on the CPU now? How would I do this?

just replace the fan with a good quality ball bearing one

Well the new HSF has some AS5 already on it, so I don't want it to pile on top of this one and cause to much heat...

well, use a q-tip or somthing to remove the thermal compound off the cpu

Should I dip the q-tip in alcohol or something?

Yes, you can use the q-tip/alcohol combo on your cpu to
clean it up. I would get the q-tips that have a durable sponge
type tip. Ive seen them at electronics stores.

I would make a couple passes over the die and anywhere else
the pad/compound might be to get it really clean.

Give it time to dry.

TIP: Dont hang the bottle of alcohol over your work, I have
seen people drop the bottle on accident or have the fluid
come pouring out when the bottle is getting low and you
have to tip it way over.

When using the alcohol it's better to use the purest you can get like 99% Isopropyl Alcohol.

what that must suk but yes do the steps and use the purest alchool possiable 99% also don't us hard liquor if you where thinking that. LOL 99% not 99 proof
