Question Infrared transmitter

Hey all, I'm new here.. I'm trying to figure out what I can use an Infrared transmitter for. I have one built into my laptop (Dell D810). I've seen online that you can use it to transfer files onto a PDA or something.. But are there any programs I can get so I could control a TV or a stereo? I've googled so many combinations of words trying to find the answer but all I can find is ways to build IR sensors from scratch. Any help would be useful, thanks.

If you have an infared receiver you can plug it into the microphone in jack, point a remote at it, press a button on the remote and record it as a sound. Then, if you play it through the transmitter it will do whatever the button on the remote would have.
