Default Hyperthreading question

How effective is hyperthreading for multi-tasking? I'm not talking about extreme multi tasking, but things like encoding songs while playing wow. How effective will it be? IE, how much of a performance boost will hyperthreading offer?

on a single application, such as a game, it will make no real difference. for multitasking, its pretty good

-AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Winchestor
-MSI K8N Neo4-F
-Sapphire Radeon X850 XT
-2x 1024 Corsair XMS Pro

Do you mean that hyperthreading won't work for just general multitasking? For example, how about if i have limewire running, encoding with itunes, and also watching a dvd on wmp at the same time. Will a hyperthreaded processor be able to encode the songs significantly faster than the non hyperthreaded processor?

I noticed a difference between my P4 2.6 without HT, and my 3Ghz with HT. HT seems to be very good at what it does.

I would say it does a good job as well. I always have a bunch of crap running at one, including dvd decoding, never a problem.
