sure there are hardware tracking devices, they are generally not ever used in computers. if your friend is worried its stolen he should probably report it. if you want to completely wipe the hdd you can use killdisk (killdisk.com). only problem is installing windows on a laptop can be a lot fo trouble because of all the custom hardware
