how does apple ipod touch wheel work

hi... i am a senior industrial design student in philadelphia, and for this computer speaker project that i am working on, i am incorporating the ipod touch wheeel technology. Does anyone know how it works, the components needed, size, wires etc? or where i can find this info? i would really appreciate it. thank you
