when u say socket number do you mean that connects to the casing...in this case 20 or the new 24's that are out
 
I dunno what socket number your systems uses...P4 uses a variety of skt numbers, right? Download CPUz and it'll tell you your skt number. The socket connects the CPU to the mobo... the pin arrangement varies
 
It's probably a socket 478. If that's the case, get the ASUS P4P800SE motherboard. Newegg has it for $94 and it's an excellent board, that gives you many options.
 
ok when i am looking for the socket number do i look on the box of the processor. or the pins or somethin
 
Look for the model of the motherboard and then go to the company's web site. They should have a specs page for it that should answer your question.
