2500+ is definitely the most bang for your buck.

Best Mobo In my opinion is ASUS A7N8X-E Deluxe
Lian Li Aluminum Case
Intel D975XBXK2R Mobo
Core 2 Duo E6700 CPU
EVGA 8800 GTS Video Card
Corsair XMS 2 x 1gig RAM
Zalman 9500 CPU cooler

the 2500+ uses the barton core but the others use the thoroughbred core, the barton core has 512 cache but the thouroughbred only has 256kb, also it uses a faster bus frquency.
Core 2 Duo E6400, DFI Infinity 975X/G, 2x 512mb DDR2 667mhz, Albatron 7900gt, WD 200gb SATA, Samsung DVD-RW, Silverstone ST-50EF 500w PSU.

after the 2500+ they start getting increasingly more expensive, the 2500+ is in about the middle of the price curve.

it is a descent CPU, which with a good enough video card is enough to play Doom 3
