Default Heatsink and Fan

I ordered an Athlon 64 3200+ retail package that comes with the heatsink and fan. When installing the retail heatsink and fan, are you required to add thermal grease, or is the thermal protection built into the heatsink? I full stupid because I know this is something I should know, but I'm not quite sure about it. Any answers would be a great help.
