Default Hardware removal

My GPU just died so I had to put in an old one. When hardware is removed from a system, any hardware, what happens to the device drivers and components? Are they automatically removed when the PC doesn't detect the hardware or do you have to remove them yourself. And if so, should you?

Default

if the hardware is PNP, it will automatically remove all drivers from the system.

Unless your PC is windows 98 and below, then you should be fine..
