Default Harddrive Problem - Help Please

Ok this girl's Dell computer wont boot to windows XP cause who knows it could be a virus, windows, or just because its a dell. She wanted her files backed up so i figured i could take her hdd and set it to secondary slive in my comp, save her files on my external hdd, reformat and put windows back on her hdd, and put her files back on the newly formatted hdd from my external. Except when I hook up her hdd as my secondary slave, windows recognises it and installs it but I can't access the files. I go to My Computer but the drive isn't there even though windows detected it and its in device Manager List under Disk Drives. So i'm lost on how to save her files even if I can. I used Norton Go Back and reset it back 14 days to try to get XP to boot, which it did and I got to desktop but the computer just keeps rebooting itself. Could this effect the hdd not working in my computer, or what....? Any ideas because im lost

thanx

Well i have one, windows might not recogize a partition running on it. There might be a conflict there.
