When starting up the computer, after the bios loads and before loading windows, I get a message that says "Error loading Operating System"

My question is, is there any way to recover or restore the information stored on the disk or is reformatting the only way out?

This is a school computer with tons of important files, so any help would be appreciated.

There are recovery programs out there. Not sure how good they are but i see them all over. There is a program you can get for free its based on Linux called Knoppix or something like that that will let you boot from the CD ROM disk and if you have a extra CD burner it will allow you to burn your files to a disk.

If you have access to another computer, you can add the HDD as a secondary device, and access it through the O/S.
