when you load the XP setup, it will say "press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver"
when it does, press F6
you should have gotten a driver disk with your SATA drive - if you don't you can download one at www.driverguide.com and put them on a disk (extract them if they're in a .zip file) then put it in, and just point it to A: then it should load the drivers, and it should detect the drive now
you have to do it this way for windows to recognized your hard drive. and you have to do this, when you have to reformat
