Default Gfx Card types

Why are there so many names under the ATI and Nvidia cards:
ATI: Connect3d, HIS, MSI, Powercolor, Gigabyte, OcUK, Sapphire, Asus
nVidia: Gainward, XFX, Asus, Gigabyte, Galaxy Glacier, Leadtek WinFast, AOpen, MSI,OcUk, PNY Verto.

Are there any differences in make/quality of the cards from any of these companies. And which is the best? I get the feeling Asus and Gainward.
