Default Floppy Drive problem

When I try to save a doc to a floppy it says "a file cannot be saved to write-protected disk". So I pushed the little tab down , but I still get the same message. Could there be something wrong with my floppy drive, because when I recieved my computer thru UPS the floppy drive was just laying inside the case not attached, so I'm thinking it was damaged. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
