i have a laptop when i put in any disk i get a message saying "cannot format floppy drive" something like that

When do u get the message? Are you trying to format it or are you trying to open it?

Could be a bad floppy or a bad floppy drives. Floppy drives go bad more often than anyother component aside from power supplies.

Yank the floppy drive out, make sure the pins are okay, and slop it back in (if you can remove it).

In BIOS, make sure you have the floppy set as the right type (yes, there are different kinds of floppy drives).

Lastly, update the drivers from the manufacturer's site (if you can find them) or just use the Windows drivers.
