Flashing BIOS

I've seen sites that say you can download things to flash the BIOS, but does it really work? I thought in the past you could only flash the BIOS by doing just that... FLASHING the BIOS. I thought you used to have to take a light or something and literally flash it. Maybe not... I don't know.

haha... I've never done it, or even heard of it before I came to this site to be honest, but I actually did a google search on it. I have no need for anyone to reply now.
