firmware?

I heard someone use the word firmware the other day and wondered what the heck it is. After checking out the definition on www.webopedia.com I am still a little confused on the subject. Anyone care to explain this to me? Please?

well i understand it as a piece of software build into hardware. Examples of firmware are: bios's, video bios's etc.

There is a way of upgrading firmware in hardware like DVD burners to make them faster or burn dual layer.
