Default Firewire Communication

Recently I was given the task of converting our USB communication device to a firewire communication device. I was wondering if anyone could point me in the direction of controlling firewire communication. I do not have the slightest idea about how firewire works. I was just put on the assignment today, but I will be looking up various resources immediatley and any resources that people know of would be helpful. Thanks.
