i was wondering, how are the low end firegl and quadro graphic cards at gaming? i never see specs on them for gaming (as this is not what they are designed for). I am looking only at the ones that are around 200 or less $. I am a gamer at heart, thus my concern with games, but I am also going to be using solidworks during the summer and at UC Berkeley. Other option is an fx 5700, probably from Asus. Thank you! Jeffo.

Those cards are geared towards rendering and modeling through both application and hardware acceleration. Their performance on games is very low because they are not designed with games in mind. They are pretty much designed for hardware accelerated graphics work.

ok, then i suppose my next question would be to ask if it would be bad to use a fx5700 for solidworks?

Here's some quick data:

http://www.spec.org/gpc/apc.data/specapc_sw2003_summary.html
http://solidworks.cad.de/int_swxbench11.htm (Use babelfish for translation) - GeForce and Quadro cards compared.

Performance in games with Quadro/FireGL cards is not any better than that of the GeForce/Radeon, and sometimes worse.

I myself don't see any harm with using a GeForce with professional apps, but the Quadro is likely to get the job done faster. I myself didn't notice that much of a difference in rendering times in 3D Studio MAX when I softmodded my GeForce4 into a Quadro 700 XGL.
