Default extracting files from a slave drive

Ok computer went dead this weekend, i inherited the basic components. I have bought a new mobo and processor with case. i plan on using the same hard drive, dvd burner drive and floppy in the new creation, however before i try to boot up the machine there are things on the hard drvie i want to extract just in case i make a BooBoo.

i am planning on using another computer at my home to extract these files and burn to dvd. I want to use the older hard drive as a slave so that i can get thing like movies and email and pictures from there. i am still going to boot up from the original in that computer and extract from the slave.

i have no idea how to do this as i am just a noob. so if anyone could tell me what the best way to go about this is then thank you. i do know to set the jumpers. i juat want to know what to use in windows to have it read the slave. BTW both drives are currently loaded with windows XP home.
