Default External HDD Compatibility Questions

a couple of questions about external HDD enclosures etc:

1) i'll assume that if i bought new hardware, ie: an external HDD case and a HDD, then it is most likely that they will work together? [discounting the obvious problems such as the physical size of the hardware]
is this a flawed assumption?

2) i still have a pretty old motherboard; it can only handle a 32GB HDD. [no bios update available]
if i wanted to use an 80GB HDD externally, through either USB or firewire [undecided as of yet] then would the limitation that the motherboard imposes on HDDs apply to external HDDs?
my guess is that the motherboards limit wouldnt affect any external HDD, but i dont want to take the chance.

thanks for any help!
