Default External Hard Drive-Leave on or off?

I just bought an external hard drive for my laptop. Is it best to leave this unit on or turn it off and only leave it on when I'm using it? My guess is it doesn't matter?

Hmm, that's a good question, I was about to post the same one. I leave mine on all the time, and it runs pretty cool, and its not causing any problems. My dad leaves his on as well and it's fine for him. Does anyone turn theirs off?

I would turn it off depending on how often I use it.

I usually keep mine off. Since I have ran out of space and I remote into my machine alot, I leave it on.
