Default External Hard Drive

I recently purchased a seagate 80 gig external hard drive. It is a good source for media storage, but I was wondering if it could be a bootable drive. I thought it would work just like an internal drive and become bootable with windows. I tried several different things but none worked. So I was wondering if I can even make it bootable?
