Default External DVD-RW prob on laptop

I have an advent 5480 dvd laptop (P3, 800mhz, 128mb RAM) which has one usb 1 port. I have now installed a pcmcia usb 2 card, and usb 2 drivers to which I wanted to connect a samsung 16x DVD-RW to (in a coolmax USA CD-509 enclosure). When I plug it in, it recognises the drive as a mass storage device, but cannot access it through windows explorer etc. Any ideas where I am going wrong?
Thanks

You may need to update your firmware or possibly download a specific application for the device.

Go here and hopefully you'll find something to help you:
