DVD-RW problems

I just built a system with an Asus motherboard and a P4 2.8Ghz processor. I installed a Maxtor 30Gb hard drive on the primary IDE and a Hitachi DVD-Rom (master) and Sony DVD-RW (slave) on the secondary IDE. This setup worked fine on my old Dell system. The problem now, whenever I put any type of disc into the Sony, it locks up the computer for about 60 seconds, and won't read it. It shows as working okay in the device manager. I've tried swapping drives around, installed the Sony only as master, same results. I thought maybe the drive was bad, so I installed a Ricoh CD-RW, but it did the same thing. Any suggestions? This is really frustrating!!!

Have you tried going to the manufacturer's websites (for both the motherboard and the drives) to see if there are any documented/known conflicts with your new hardware configuration? They will generally list any conflicts and provide troubleshooting tips.

I have gone to both Asus' and Sony's website, no help there. I e-mailed both companies tech support 2 days ago, but haven't heard anything from either of them yet. I'm thinking it's a motherboard problem, only because when I put the Ricoh drive in it did the same thing as the Sony.

Sony can be a bit of a bear to navigate but I have been getting somewhat better at it since my neighbour's boys buy alot of sony products that I end up having to sort out for them... ** chuckles ** I found these links, somewhat interlinked but I think you might find the first one, (and the areas linked to from there ) of the most help.. I'm unsure what OS you are using. ...

Give them a shot, see if there's anything relevant there and let me know how it goes:)

I know what you mean about Sony's website. I did check there, tried their 'drive check' program, but it just locked up when I ran it. I'm running Windows XP Pro with SP1. Sony says the windows drivers work with this drive, but I don't know if it's a driver problem or something else.
