damn you are on the right track. yo can either upgrade your window media player to latest version or download and install a trial version of winDVD or powerDVD. they should have the codecs you need for free. it sounds to me there is some kind of software conflict, you should not need anything to play a standard DVD movie.

well after installing the PowerDVD software, everything seems to be working just fine now...thanks for the help everyone...
