DVD R/W not reading right?

I have a DVD R/W 8X and its supposed to read at like 40x or DVD 16x or something. Well when i dump a DVD on to my HD it reads at max 3x and i was wonderin if it was supposed to go this slow.

I've had this problem on a 8x DVD drive and usually, they read as fast as they burn, so it may be a 8x read too. Then on top of that, they never get up to speed too fast, when I tested my 8x, i tested it using Nero tools, and it never did reach a full 8x through the whole test. It averaged 4x.

Maybe it's your burner, or maybe it's just the way it is.

EDIT, try updating the firmware.

Usually, drives wont read at full speed.

Well i have a 16x burner now and i read at like 20x but this 8x burner is supposed to read at like 40 i think but thats just what the box says. I was just dissappointed cause i didnt think it would just read at 3x max cause thats not what i payed for.

You sure that it doesn't read CD's at 40? I have never encountered a DVD drive that reads that fast, or even states it reads that fast.

ok my bad lol. it reads cds at 48x, dvdr at 4, dvd rw at 6, cd r at 40, cd rw at 32, and dvd rom at 40x

Hmm, i'm going to look at newegg and see if i can find a drive that reads DVD's at 40. What brand is it?

EDIT, nope, not a single DVD rom read speed over 16x. I need to see this miracle of engineering myself, LOL.

I still say go to the manufacturer's website and download the firmware updates, that helped a lot when my 8x burner was going bad.
