Default DVD Layer and Data

How many layers of data can be stored on one side of a DVD and how many data areas are on a single side of a DVD-R?

Two layers, totaling about 8.6GB, as far as I know. As for data areas, do you mean sectors? If so, a DVD-R has aprox 2,298,496 sectors, with 2048 bytes per sector. I say "aprox" because it can differ slightly from maker to maker. Source: here.
