What exactly is the advantage of the dual channel memory option?
Should I get one 1gb stick or two 512 dual channel?

2 stick in dual channel is better, as the modules work together, kinda like raid if that helps you understand better.

ok here is simple and precise explanation,

considering two basic things:

1: data storage capacity
2: data transfer rate

before explaining i'll quote example of normal DDR3200 memory stick (regardless of size, it has data transfer rate of 3.2GB/s to be exact)

now if you are on single channel mobo, say you bought 2 X 256MB PC3200 memory modules, now it will increase your data storage capacity to 512MB, but data transfer rate will remain the same @ 3.2GB/s

as if you use the same 2 sticks in dual-channel mobo, it will not only increase the data capacity to 512MB, but as well double the data transfer rate to 6.4GB/s
