Disappearing external drive.

I've been using an external HDD in conjuction with Acronis True Image to keep disc images. Normally the external drive is recognised by My Computer as Drive 'H'. The drive has ceased to be recognised. I'm using XP Home SP2. Help please.

It doesnt show up in windows explorer any more?

You could try assigning a different drive letter to it. Or making sure that the cable that connects it to the computer is securely in place.

Did it stop after installing SP2? (just wondering as you mention it...)

AND_YOU_ARE and mrpete. Thank you both for your replies. I unplugged the usb plug and tried another usb socket. And it worked o.k.. Looking in Device Manager, the error had disappeared and I've been able to save an incremental image to the external drive so it seems to be working again. Also I checked the usb socket which used to serve the external drive by inserting a pen drive, which was also recognised. Haven't a clue what went wrong but it all seems o.k. now. Again many thanks for your help.

Put it in the old port (the one that didn't work) and reinstall your drivers for the drive.

Thanks for that ShoobieRat. I'll give it a try and see whether it will still work when returned to the original port.
