Default Digital Camera

I have been looking for a small mid-range digital camera. I am going to be living out of the country for 2 years, and I need something small that I can take with me. Preferably something that really isnt too flashy, and something I can be carried easily. Also it needs to be durable, and have decent battery life. I plan on spending no more than $400, but anything in that range would be good. I really don't know much about cameras, I just need something that is easy to use that takes decent pictures. I have been to Bestbuy hundreds of times, and I just get overwhelmed at the selection, plus they all look the same to me. Can someone give me a few suggestions.

ASUS P8Z68 Deluxe
Intel Core i7 2600k
16GB DDR3 G-Skill Ripjaws
1TB 7200 Segagte Drive
eVGA GeForce 570
Samsung Blu-Ray Drive
Antec 850 Watt PSU
Windows 7 Professional

My uncle got a new digital camera last week. It's a Canon IXUS.

It is 5 megapixel and the pictures are crystal when put on the computer. Best quality i have seen. This camera Retails for $399 in AU so it should be a little less in america. Also get a 512mb addon card.
