Default Data recovery and forensics

What's everyone's take on this?

What are some good programs for this?

Where should I start?

What are some good freeware and shareware programs.

I really want to get into this kinda stuff.

To recover data on damaged hard drives, or just normal hard drives that data has been deleted on, whether purposely or accidental.

Within windows, and on a linux distro.

Scenario #1: (Within windows) Someone accidentaly deleted some tax documents etc... that they need help getting back.

Scenario #2: (Through a live linux distro) Someone intentionally, or unintentionally delete some sys files that are needed to boot windows. I need to know how to boot through a linux cd and restore those sys files, or other files.

Thanks a lot on helping me with this.
