A few days back I spilled an entire glass of water on my laptop, which shorted it out completely. The machine is nearly 3 years old and was on it's last legs anyway, however it had some important data on the HD that was not backed up.

I removed the hard drive from the unit and have found a "data transfer kit" (you can check it out at http://www.cmsproducts.com/products/data_transfer_solutions.htm)
that seems like it may be the solution for me. Has anyone used this type of product before? It seems so straightforward, why would anyone pay $150/hour+ for data recovery services?

The other question is, how do I know if my HD was ruined from the spill? Is there anyway to tell if the drive is still valid?

you can tell the HDD is ruing by pluggin it into a laptop and see if you get a read off it! if you don't then it is more than likely reked was the drive wet when you took it out of the machine?
