On a xp home pc, when i work on it, the harddrive will start "running". When i do press ctrl + delete and go to performance, the cpu is running on 100%. And this keeps on for a long time.

I deleted all the unecisary programs. I checked for viruses uisng symantec anti virus. I have checked for spyware.

It help when I close svchost process that has the most activity. How can I find out what is causing the cpu to run at 100%

svchost.exe is a system process belonging to Windows which handles processes executed from DLLs. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

if you run perfmon you can try to find out exactly what is running.

Symantec, Firefox on PDF or Windows Media Files, or SPYWARE not viruses but SPYWARE.

Run Both of these.
Webroot Spy Sweeper (30 day trial)
Spybot (FREE)

If you are running Microsoft AntiSpyware, it will sometimes 'hang' trying to open. I've had it do it to me twice. Problem is, it won't 'unhang'.

If you are, and it is (Task Manager, Google the file that is eating up the CPU), reboot into Safe mode and uninstall it. Rebooot and reinstall.
