i was wondering, y do CPU companies make a separite cpu for servers, like the opteron/xeon. y not just use a 64 or p4 for servers?

i know there is prolly an explanation for this, but i dont know it. so if anyone has details, or a link to details, that'd be great. thx

Im pretty sure becaus it has to handle a different load then a normal computer does, they are built differently therefore they need different components. They act differently also. The architecture is not the same so they have to make other components.

Usually they run larger caches and are able to be linked together, up to 4 CPU's:confused:

Most of the fastest desktop CPU's are just server variants, the FX series is basicly an Opteron and the P4EE is a Xeon:confused:

cache is most expensive part in a CPU (after die, of course) and server based CPU normally came with higher Cache's, unlike on 875P chipset, which can be used as entry level server/workstation, uses desktop cpu.
