Default Connecting IDE to SATA

Are external IDE HDD compatible with notebooks that contains a SATA HDD?

ie. external hdd (ide) -> usb 2.0 connection -> notebook hdd (sata)

Also, does it work the opposite way around?

ie. external hdd (sata) -> usb 2.0 connection -> notebook hdd (ide)

Thanks for your help

as long as the IDE or SATA hard drive is hooked up to your notebook with a USB connection, it dosent matter what type of Hard drive is inside your notebook.
