Exclamation Connecting Direct to Another Computer

I hope I'm posting in the right place as I'm new to these forums. I am trying to figure out how to connect directly to another computer in my home for 2 reasons:

1. File Sharing
2. To ue the Direct Connect feture offered in Command & Conquer Generals.

Both computers do have network cards installed

At this point I'm at a loss. I've searched and read most all that I can find online (at least through Google) now I could really just use some good solid advice or info....Thank you

connect both PC's to a network hub or switch with cat 5 cable, configure network settings, and it will be done

or, get a serial cable and connect them directly, easier to use the network though
