Computer freezing

Hi I have a compaq presario athlon 1100 256 meg ram xp pro. It started freezing yesterday. Now after at most 10-15 minutes the computer freezes, display just stops no corruption no response to anything. I've tried booting dos utilities which do the same (memory and drive tests) also booting a linux cd does the same I swapped the memory module and the graphics card but system still freezes. Any guesses ?

virus check recently? I know a LOT of people who say that they don't have viruses and never would, that actually do. It's a possibility at least

Running avg up to date nothing found. Would have hoped a virus shouldn't get started if booted via ms-dos floppy or linux cd ?
