Default Computer freezes

My computer just keeps freezing, it sometimes doesn't make it to the sign on screen for Windows.

I tried running the defrag, but that freezes when loading. I am lost and frusturated. Can someone please help me out??? I am using my laptop as of right now.

I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2
512 SDRAM
60 GB HD
P4 2.0 GHZ

the hdd could be dying. or the memory which would explain why it doesnt like loading windows or trying to defrag.

well you need to confirm whats causing the problems first. use some diagnostics programs, just google for hdd testing programs and memory testing programs, do you know what make the hdd is?

is the fan on the processor spinning? Sounds like an overheat.
