my friend has a lamp on his desk next to his monitor anytime he turns on the lamp half his monitor gets the swirly rainbow affect. the lamp on my desk as you turn it on and off you can just about here the speakers click with it

speaker magnets should not be a problem for hard drives. they will always cause problems with CRTs though because it interferes with the beam control. as for lamps etc interfering with monitors that's a result of the magnetic field created by the electrical current.
