"CMOS settings wrong" & "CMOS memory size wrong" messages

Hi, When I switched on my computer (Win98SE) I got a message saying "CMOS settings wrong" & "CMOS memory size wrong" I pressed F1 and changed the clock ( it was saying october 16, 2001 ) and now things appear to be okay. What happened to change the settings and memory size? How can I fix this? Thanks a lot.

Probably empty battery, or somebody reset the BIOS.
