If you have the money, I highly reccommend an large upgrade from what you currently have.
1. CPU - can you afford at least 2.66GHz? go for 800MHz, not 533 fsb.
2. Mobo - Don't get me wrong, I'm sure that Gigabyte is a good brand, but perhaps an Abit or Asus?
3. Ram - get 512MB at least, and PC3200
4. Vid Card - 9800 at least. lol. I heard someone say that SE stood for "stupid edition". so don't get SE. It's the lowest on the "video card food chain".

Everything else looks good to me.

I just bought that Lite-On Drive and put it in my system. Works perfect, and its a lot quieter than my ASUS 52X "Quiet Track" yeah right, CDROM. Haven't had a problem with it yet, plays DVD's perfectly. I might though, suggest another board manufacturer for that chip. May want to check to see what MSI, Abit, or ASUS have to offer. You also might want to look into getting a 512Mb stick of ram, opposed to 2, 256MB sticks. You will find it cheaper if you just buy the one stick of 512Mb. What kind of budget are you one, and whats it for? If its for gaming, you might want to try AMD, you will get more preformance for the money.

I concure with Blackmoore about the AMD. If your a gamer, get something in the AMD 64-bit line. But, it doesn't look like your ram is a 2-piece...or am I overlooking something. It would be more expensive getting a 2-piece, but then, depending on your mobo, it could be a dual-channel, which is better than a regular.

For what purpose will you be using the system? Word processing, internet surfing, or something more intensive like gaming or video editing? Also, how much are you planning to spend?

it looks like you're building a particularly low end machine there *hides my P3 500* but I think you can get better for a little more

Athlon 64 3000+ socket 939 $171
they've only just released the Athlon 64 3000+ in socket 939

Zalman CNPS7000-CU CPU cooler $39
CPU cooling, todays CPU's now require at the very least a heatsink and fan to keep them going without overheating

Asus A8V Deluxe $131
you won't need the PCI ATA133 controller, the A8V already has ATA133 ports

Black Lite-On 8x DVD±R/RW $50
a DVD burner for $5 more

Seagate 80GB SATA $66
it will be faster than the WD drive because it's SATA, and Seagate drives are very quiet too
remember to uncheck the options you don't want on the site

Radeon 9600 Pro $110
it is far better than the 9600 SE, the SE gets destroyed in the benchmarks by it

Kingston 256MB PC3200 $44 each
I recommend you get PC3200 over PC2700, it is not much more in price, but is a lot more in performance. I also reccomend you get 2 of these, to make 512MB and run them in dual channel. 512MB is what I reccomend minimum for a new PC, especially running XP. I use a lot of paging file because I only have 320MB

Enermax mid-tower case with 400W PSU $58
it's a good case, and a reliable PSU in it; you can always trust an Enermax PSU, they're among the best quality

total of what's in your post: $549
total of what I posted + the $9 floppy: $722
for $173 more you get a lot better computer, which you shouldn't have to upgrade in a while

Athlon 64 3000+ socket 939 $171

Geeze, that makes me mad.... It was only 2 weeks ago that I picked up my socket 754, AMD 64 3200+. I knew I would be better off getting a 939 chip but I just couldn't afford it and I didn't want to wait, thinking it would be months before the lower chips were released on the socket 939.

sorry, for the slow response. but basicallythe computer isnt for anything intensive, it will probabaly only be used for internet surfing and word processing, and possibly not so graphics intensive games. its supposed to be a cheap replacement for a older sony vaio that pretty much reached the end of its life. its not for me though, the one im building for myself is a bit pricey lol. anyhow i will run your system you suggested apokalipse, by the family im building it for. its just they probably will stick with the lower price. besidesthey got some shitty monitor anyhow that i swear adds an "underwater" feeling when u look at it.

yeah I bet it would, it came out about 3 days ago
AMD are getting a bit unpredictable with their new technologies
