I hate it when computer tech wannabes will post flippant answers to "flash the BIOS" when they don't even know what purpose it serves. Flashing the BIOS will most likely not fix this type of problem.
Often times, in these cases, there is a molex connector or a IDE connector that is not fully and properly connected to the device or MB. I would advise your friend to open up the case and make sure the IDE cable connections are snug.
