i have win 98. my cd-rom will work for data disks but won't play an audio cd. the sound is o.k. because sound will will work when pc starts up etc. the light will come on on the cd rom drive when i put a disk in music player display will come up showing the time elapsing, track etc. but there is no sound.

you may need to check if your sound card and drive has digital audio ports, if so your drive should have come with a digital audio cable, try replacing it and see if it works or if you dont have one add one.

i found a small wire on the floor and hooked it up from sound car to analog connection on cdrom drive. all works now. thanks!
