Default cd-r/rw drive not working

I have windows xp and recently my cd-r/rw drive stopped working properly. It is a Philips cdd4851 and it will not read or write cd's. It doesn't recognize when I have a cd in the drive and even when I simply open and close the disc tray with nothing in it, the computer gets all screwed up and I have to reboot. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

hope this helps
when you do this just push it in as far as it will go
you should not have to push too hard to get it in
